Firefox Update Lets Users Turn Off Built In AI Features

Mozilla is preparing a new update to the Firefox web browser that will allow users to turn off artificial intelligence features with greater ease. The change is aimed at giving people more control over how AI is used while browsing the web, particularly for those who prefer a simpler, more traditional experience.

The update adds a dedicated section to Firefox settings where AI powered tools can be disabled entirely. A single master switch will turn off all current and future AI features, stopping them from running in the background or appearing through prompts and suggestions. This makes it possible to opt out of AI with one clear action.

For users who still want some AI functionality, Firefox will also offer more detailed controls. Individual features such as automatic webpage translation, AI generated summaries, smart tab organisation and sidebar chat tools can be switched on or off separately. This allows users to keep useful tools while removing others they do not want.

Mozilla says the decision follows extensive feedback from its community. While AI features can improve accessibility and productivity, some users have expressed concerns around privacy, performance and unnecessary complexity. The new controls are intended to address those concerns without removing features entirely.

Importantly, once these settings are chosen, they will remain in place across future Firefox updates. Users will not need to reconfigure their preferences after installing new versions of the browser.

By allowing users to turn off AI features rather than forcing them by default, Mozilla is reinforcing its long held focus on user choice. As artificial intelligence becomes more common in everyday software, Firefox is positioning itself as a browser that puts control firmly back in the hands of its users.
