A renewed shortage of memory chips is expected to drive up prices for consumer electronics, placing additional pressure on households already facing rising living costs.
The shortage is being fuelled by surging demand from artificial intelligence data centres, which require vast quantities of advanced memory chips to train and run large AI models. Manufacturers are increasingly prioritising high-margin enterprise customers, leaving fewer components available for smartphones, laptops and tablets.
Industry analysts warn that this imbalance could persist throughout the year, leading to higher prices and slower product refresh cycles for consumer devices. Some manufacturers are also expected to cut back on production or delay launches in response to constrained supply.
Memory chips, such as DRAM and NAND flash, are essential components in almost all modern electronics. Even modest price increases at the component level can translate into noticeable rises in retail prices, particularly in mid-range devices where profit margins are already tight.
