Microsoft to Shut Down Outlook Lite for Android

Microsoft will discontinue its Outlook Lite app for Android users on May 25, 2026, marking the end of the lightweight email service designed for lower-spec devices.

After this date, the app will no longer provide access to emails, calendars, or attachments. While users may still be able to open the app, its core functionality will be disabled, effectively rendering it unusable.

The shutdown follows a gradual phase-out. Microsoft stopped allowing new downloads of Outlook Lite in October 2025, signalling its intention to consolidate services into a single, unified Outlook experience.

Outlook Lite was originally developed to serve users with limited storage, slower processors, and weaker internet connectivity. By offering a stripped-down interface focused on essential email functions, it became a practical solution for those using older or entry-level Android devices.

Microsoft is now directing users to transition to its primary Outlook Mobile app, which offers a broader set of features and ongoing support. The company has integrated an “Upgrade” option within Outlook Lite to help users move across more easily.

User data will not be affected by the change. Emails, calendar entries, and attachments are stored within Microsoft accounts rather than the app itself, meaning users can regain full access by logging into the standard Outlook app.

The decision reflects a wider strategy to streamline Microsoft’s mobile offerings, focusing development and security updates on a single platform. While this approach simplifies maintenance and ensures consistency, it may present challenges for users with older devices that were better suited to the lightweight version.

As the deadline approaches, affected users will need to switch apps to maintain uninterrupted access to their accounts.
