Apple continues to innovate and enhance user experience with its latest feature, Distraction Control, set to debut in Safari on macOS Sequoia and iOS/iPadOS 18. This feature is designed to empower users by allowing them to hide distracting elements on web pages, offering a more focused and streamlined browsing experience.
What is Distraction Control?
Distraction Control is not your typical ad blocker. While it doesn't prevent ads from loading, it allows users to temporarily hide them along with any other webpage elements they find distracting. This includes pop-ups, newsletter signup banners, auto play videos, and even content elements like headlines and images. The feature is part of the macOS Sequoia beta 5, with a public beta expected soon.
How to Use Distraction Control
Using Distraction Control is simple and intuitive:
Access the Page Menu
In Safari for macOS Sequoia, a new Page Menu icon is located on the left side of the address bar. Click on it to reveal a pop-up menu.
Hide Distracting Items
Select the 'Hide Distracting Items' option. A blue box will highlight elements on the webpage as you hover over them. Click to make the highlighted element disappear. The webpage will automatically reorganise to fill in the gap.
Manage Hidden Items
If you wish to restore hidden elements, click the Page Menu icon again and select 'Show Hidden Items.' You can choose to make items reappear or keep them hidden.
Why Distraction Control Matters
This feature is a game-changer for users who want to tailor their browsing experience. By removing unwanted distractions, users can focus on the content that matters most to them. This is particularly beneficial for those who find pop-ups and other intrusive elements disruptive.
As Distraction Control is still in beta, Apple is actively seeking user feedback to refine the feature. Users can report issues directly through the Feedback Assistant app. This collaborative approach ensures that the final release will meet the diverse needs of Apple's global user base.
