Tesla Expands Robotaxi Service in Texas

Tesla has expanded its robotaxi service into Dallas and Houston, widening the reach of its autonomous ride-hailing network beyond Austin. The move marks the company’s latest step in its push to make self-driving vehicles central to its future growth strategy.
The rollout was confirmed through a company social media post showing Tesla vehicles operating without drivers or front-seat safety monitors. Tesla now offers robotaxi services in three Texas cities, after first launching in Austin last year and removing safety drivers from that market earlier this year.
The expansion remains limited in scale. Reports suggest Tesla may only have a small number of active vehicles in each new city, with some tracking services showing just one robotaxi currently operating in Dallas and one in Houston. In Houston, the service is confined to a relatively small area around Jersey Village, while Dallas is also expected to begin with a tightly geofenced zone.
The move comes as competition in the robotaxi sector intensifies. Companies such as Waymo and Zoox are rapidly expanding their own autonomous services across major US cities, increasing pressure on Tesla to scale quickly. Waymo already operates in Dallas and Houston, giving Tesla a direct competitor in both markets.
For Tesla, robotaxis are no longer a side project. Much of the company’s long-term value is tied to its ambitions in artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and robotics. Elon Musk has repeatedly described self-driving vehicles as a major growth engine for Tesla, even as the company’s electric vehicle business faces increasing competition.
Questions remain around safety and scale. Tesla disclosed earlier this year that its Austin robotaxi fleet had been involved in 14 crashes since launch. While the company continues to expand, critics argue that small fleets and tightly controlled operating zones make it difficult to judge whether the service is ready for broader adoption.
The challenge now is whether Tesla can move beyond carefully selected routes and limited fleets to create a robotaxi network capable of operating across entire cities. That transition will determine whether the service becomes a genuine transportation business or remains a controlled demonstration of Tesla’s technology.
