Toyota has announced a significant shift in strategy, confirming it will launch four new battery electric vehicles by 2027 as it moves more decisively into the fully electric market.
The Japanese manufacturer, long recognised for its leadership in hybrid technology with models such as the Prius, has historically taken a cautious approach to battery electric vehicles. Instead, it prioritised hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell development. However, growing global demand for electric cars and increasing regulatory pressure have prompted a more direct commitment to BEVs.
The four new models will expand Toyota’s existing electric line-up and are expected to launch in key markets including the United States. Among them will be a fully electric version of the Highlander SUV, offering multiple battery options and an estimated range of up to around 320 miles, depending on configuration. All-wheel drive variants are also expected to be available.
Toyota has acknowledged that EV sales growth has cooled in some regions following the reduction of government incentives. Despite this, the company says it intends to secure a meaningful share of the electric vehicle market while continuing to develop hybrids and plug-in hybrids as part of a broader multi-technology strategy.
Industry analysts note that Toyota’s pivot comes later than several competitors, many of whom have already committed heavily to battery-only platforms. The question now is whether Toyota’s reputation for reliability, strong global manufacturing base and pricing strategy will allow it to compete effectively against established EV leaders and fast-growing Chinese brands.
With stricter emissions regulations being introduced worldwide and consumer expectations shifting towards fully electric options, Toyota’s renewed commitment to battery electric vehicles marks one of the most important transitions in the company’s recent history.
