Meta Shares New Ways to Combat Sextortion Scammers

In a great move to combat the rising tide of sextortion scams, Meta has introduced a suite of measures designed to protect its users across Facebook and Instagram. This initiative comes in response to alarming statistics from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which reports a staggering 300% increase in sextortion cases over the past three years.

Meta's new strategy is an enhanced detection system that flags potential sextortion accounts. Teen users will now receive crucial information about new connection requests, including the account's age, geographic location, and mutual follower status. This empowers young users to make more informed decisions about their online interactions, potentially thwarting sextortion attempts before they begin.

Leveraging these same indicators, Meta is implementing restrictions on follower list visibility. This clever tactic aims to disarm scammers by limiting their ability to exploit user connections for blackmail purposes. It's a significant step in dismantling the infrastructure that enables these digital predators to operate.

Meta's comprehensive approach also includes technical safeguards. The platform is rolling out restrictions on screenshotting and screen recording for ephemeral content, adding an extra layer of protection for vulnerable users. Additionally, an expanded blur feature for detected nude images will be enabled by default for users under 18, accompanied by warnings about the risks associated with sharing sensitive content.

In a collaborative effort with NCMEC and Thorn, Meta is developing educational resources to help teens identify potential sextortion scams. The centrepiece of this initiative is an informative video that will be prominently featured to millions of young users across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia - regions frequently targeted by these cybercriminals.

This multi-faceted approach demonstrates Meta's commitment to user safety in an increasingly complex digital world. By combining technological innovation with targeted education, the company is taking significant strides in the ongoing battle against online exploitation. As these measures roll out, the tech giant hopes to set a new standard for user protection in the social media sphere.
